Twitter Campaigns- Pros and Cons week 4

When it comes to twitter, it can be used for a lot of great exposure.  Also if you are a company with a large following, the content that you produce on your social media can really turn the tide in this day and age.  There have been plenty of examples over twitters thirteen plus years being active.  Content produced can really make or break a company in the eyes of a consumer.

One example of great promotion on Twitter is the music streaming service Pandora.  They started a campaign saying there is a piece of music that is related to every "emoji" in the world.  So by tweeting at the company with the hashtag #SoundsLike, with an emoji, they would send a song back to you that reminding them of said emoji.

The concept is really smart because it plays off two things that people love in this day and age, music and emojis.  By making the connection between these two things they have placed the name of Pandora in the memories of people whenever they hear a certain song, or if they see a certain emoji on a screen.  Once you establish that name recognition with something so simple, you have done the deed that you were intending on achieving.

There are always two sides of a coin whenever a company has this much power to be able to speak to their fans at the literal click of a button.  During the 2014 World Cup, the United States defeated Ghana with a score of 2-1.  Delta Airlines, in their zeal to seize the moment and promote their flights to the capital of Ghana, Accra, posted the game's final score with an image of the Statue of Liberty behind the United States score and an image of a Giraffe behind Ghana's score, The only bad thing with this is that giraffes don't live in Ghana.

Something like this doesn't sound like a huge mistake to someone like me and you because it could be an honest mistake.  But for a company as big as Delta Airlines you would think they would do a little research before posting something of this nature.  There was a lot of backlash from this post.  The day and age we live in when it comes to social media people always want to be heard and express their options, even if they aren't right in the things that are said.  People in the comments of this post said Delta Airlines was discriminating against the people a Ghana and pretty much saying the company was stereotyping the country with all of the surrounding countries.  Things like these are huge accusations, but when it comes to the standing of a company of this size, they always have to tuck their tails and apologize for their actions.  Even if they don't believe they were at fault.

Needless to say, when it comes to social media and large companies like this, it is great to have a place to promote and to keep engaged with your fans and followers.  If you do it tastefully and the research is applied.  With everyone having access to seeing whatever is posted now,  you really have to be cautious about the things said on the internet or they could potentially affect your brand and the way people perceive you as a company.
